My secret weapon

I may be gladly throwing my arms around my winter woollies like long lost friends (well they are really) but that doesn't mean the summer dresses have to get pushed to the back of the wardrobe or packed away. Ohhhhhh no!

For starters, there's nothing more depressing to me than wearing practical neutrals for the next six months. Or just fleeces and jeans for that matter, warm and comfy though they may be. I've been there and done that and it's drab (even if everything did match when I got dressed in the dark).

So I'm starting this season, dressing as I mean to go on, still in my floral prints and colourful, pick-me-up clothes, but I'm layering up for warmth. Crucial to this is my secret weapon: the thermal vest. Ha, I know it sounds as attractive as Nora Batty's stockings, but hear me out.

I own several thermal vests; long-sleeved, short-sleeved and even a strappy one for chilly summer days (I told you I felt the cold). I've bought them from M&S, Sainsbury's and even off the market. They're not sexy but they can be (vaguely) pretty. The main thing is they're warm. And the reason they're secret? Because they should remain hidden!! Focus instead on the positives, that you can continue wearing your favourite summer dress even when Jack Frost starts nipping!

Outfit: Dress: Primark via charity shop; Long-sleeved top: Gap; thermal vest worn underneath: M&S; Socks: Avoca; shoes: vintage; bracelet: stall at a gala.

P.S. I even have a pair of long-johns! They're not as bad as you'd expect...

  1. I am a thermal girl too and have long been preaching their wonderfulness as all around me are moaning that they are cold and I am lovely sung and warm.

I wear Thermals and I am not ashamed to admit it :)

  2. I think you may be onto a winner here. Never having heard of thermals as a child, my poor eldest suffered through a couple of years of walks to school without them, but last year I discovered how much happier he was with a cosy vest and longjohns. Guess I should be organised this year and purchase some for me BEFORE the freezing blizzards really hit.

  4. I am a big fan of winter layering, as I hate not being able to wear stuff cos its cold. My mum swears by thermals...she's quite fashionable for her age....I've been wanting some for aaaages but yet to find a plus size retailer that makes them..fat people get cold too!!

  5. Layering is quite frankly, the business! Our thoughts are totally in line on this one, I really don't go in for bulky jackets and tend to layer up instead - vests under shirts, under a bright and snuggly cardigan. Wrist warmers are another favourite winter weapon, long socks stop the whistling of the wind up the trouser leg and wrist warmers take care of the sleeves! :-) Then scarves are a category unto themselves - so many lovely scarves *wanders of into a daydream*

  6. I have tons of thermal's, vests and longjohns. In fact we all have them. I refuse to put the heating on all the time, as it isn't healthy, so make the boys wear theirs under their PJ's in the winter. MadDad even goes to work in his under his suit in the winter as his offices are freezing, plus I was worried that he would get caught in the snow.

  7. It's like a super hero costume on under their regular clothes. Thermal Girl! With the power of heat retention! A good idea though to prolong the use of those pretty summer dresses.

  8. My brother-in-law's girlfriend wears navy blue calf length thermal leggings with short jumper dresses. often with tights underneath, and boots just short enough that you still see the lacy bit of the thermals. And it always looks ace. Also, I wear thermals under EVERYTHING in winter. The grey long sleeved ones work nicely instead of (or as well as) a long sleeved t-shirt! LOVE the blue oscks with brown shoes. LOVE!
